December 18, 2007 - UNDP inaugurates wind energy systems in Assab.

In line with the efforts to use clean and environment friendly energy sources, UNDP CO in cooperation with Ministry of Energy and Mines and GEF has introduced a wind generated electric power, the first of its kind in Eritrea and a second in Sub Saharan Africa. August 31, 2007 - UNDP and NUEW to Open Gender Research Studies in Eritrea.
In proportion to the endeavors to develop a national database on gender issues in Eritrea that promote social change to advance women’s economic empowerment and in order to promote shared growth and achieve MDG 3, UNDP Eritrea in cooperation with the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW) is planning to establish Gender studies, Research and Resource Center in Eritrea under the stewardship of NUEW. In line to this, the preparation of TOR and recruitment of a qualified international consultant was completed to undertake assignment on designing the operational framework and identify the needs to enable the center to be the desired resources centre.

August 30, 2007 - UNDP Supports to Strengthening the Mining Sector in Eritrea.
To develop a foundation for future economic growth and thereby fight poverty, UNDP Eritrea is involved in supporting the mine sector of Eritrea. Taking in to account the potential contribution of mining sector to the overall economic growth and development of the nation, UNDP supports the capacity development of the Ministry of Energy and Mines.
Accordingly, it provides support in reviewing, evaluating and finalizing of the draft Bisha feasibility report. Recently, a sound model mining contract agreement has been developed. It is known that the government’s priority in the mine sector is focused on promoting both domestic and foreign direct investment.

August 30, 2007 - HIV/AIDS and Organizational Health & Safety (OHS) Programmes in the Work Place
In line with efforts to fight HIV/AIDS epidemic, UNDP and ILO in cooperation with National Confederation of Eritrean Workers (NCEW) launches a new strategy for implementing HIV/AIDS work place programme. The programme involves in the coordination of efforts and activities on OHS and HIV in different public and private sector institutions.
The programme focuses on enhancing workers awareness and participation by strengthening training on HIV/AIDS and OHS programmes. The training is being given to the established committees and appointed representatives of institutions.

June 29, 2007 - Internally Displaced Persons Return to Their Villages.
The war affected 20,892 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) returned to the communities of origin or new resettlement areas designated by the Government. The IDPs who were living for more than six years in temporary make shift camps as well as with host communities were returned during the months of January to May 2007. According to reports, out of the total returnee IDPs 52 % were living with host communities and the remaining were living in temporary camps.
In this regard, UNDP’s intervention is focused on transportation of IDPs, providing shelter assistance, provision of access to potable water supply as well as sustainable livelihoods (agriculture, income generating activities…) so that the returned IDPs can be self sufficient.
