December 28, 2008:-National Capacity to perform assess Green House Gas Mitigation assessment and analysis enhanced

As part of the Second National Communications project implementation activities, supported by an international expert the Department of Environment (DOE) in collaboration with UNDP-Eritrea successfully carried out a 10 days training in Green House Gas (GHG) Mitigation and Assessment and Analyses between 15-27 December 2008 at the Consultancy Training and Testing Services, Asmara.

The training was participatory in nature attended by members of the different thematic working groups in particular representatives from the sectors Energy and Agriculture (Land Use and Land Use Change and Forestry and Livestock). It gave participants an opportunity to adequately get acquaint with various mitigation techniques such as LEAP, COMAP and RETSCREEN which are instrumental in undertaking GHG Mitigation assessments in the Energy and Agriculture sectors. (States are often required to apply these techniques while implementing their national communications projects as part of the IPCC good practice guidance).

Having the national GHG inventory for key sources already carried out, the enhanced capacity will enable the SNC project coordination office to further into the GHG Mitigation and Assessment step. Accordingly, following successful exercise of GHG Mitigation Assessments, each sector is expected to come up with at least to CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) that will contribute to the national GHG emission abatement efforts and achieving sustainable development.
