Eritrea Participates in the MDGs Acceleration Framework (MAF)

Asmara, August 15, 2011: Eritrea participated in the MDGs acceleration framework (MAF) on August 8-10 2011 in Johannesburg. Following the invitation from UNDP Regional Service Centre for Eastern and Southern Africa to invite government counterparts to participate in the rollout of the MAF workshop, an Eritrean Government delegation led by Eritrean Ambassador to the Republic of South Africa to participated in the workshop.

The main objective workshop was to strengthen country level capacity to prepare a participatory-oriented and result-based MDGs Acceleration Framework country priority action plan and support its implementation to facilitate rapid progress towards the MDGs by 2015.

The MDGs Acceleration Framework (MAF), an integral part of the MDG Breakthrough Strategy (BTS), was approved by the UNDP Management Group as an instrument to support countries to accelerate progress towards the MDGs over the next five years (2011-2015). The MDGs Acceleration Framework is a systematic way of identifying bottlenecks to MDG progress, prioritizing solutions that can break these bottlenecks and building partnership around off tracked MDGs. This instrument was globally piloted in ten countries including Belize, Colombia, Ghana, Jordan, Lao PDR, Papua New Guinea, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Togo and Uganda. The implementation of MAF has been extended to the four Sahel countries (Burkina Faso, Chad, Niger and Mali) – although at varying stage of completion.

Since the first MDGR has been released, the CO has continued to remain engaged with the Government about moving forward on the MDGs, especially drafting a second MDGs report.
