UNDP signs annual work plans with two regional administrations.

United Nations development Programme (UNDP) and Regional Administrations of Debub and Gash Barka signed an agreement to accelerate the return, resettlement and reintegration of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in war affected areas of Debub and Gash Barka regional Administrations. The agreement focused on transportation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), assisting the returnee IDPs in the construction of their shelter, provision of potable water supply construction and sustainable livelihoods.

The work plan also focuses on strengthening the capacity of the two Regional Administrations to undertake effective and efficient implementation of the programme.

In the signing ceremony, the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, Mr. Macleod Nyirongo said that in the follow up tour to Debub and Gash Barka Administrative Regions we were able to see the developments and implemented programmes and we are really satisfied that the activities are brought about in accordance to the plan. In all the sites we visited, we have seen micro dams, schools, water supply reservoirs constructed for use by the beneficiaries added the resident coordinator.

In his side the Governor of Debub Regional Administration, Mr. Mustafa Nurhussien stated that his office is very great full to UNDP for expediting the transfer of the resources on time and signing the annual work plan for 2008.

Expressing his feelings the Governor of Gash Barka Regional Administration, Mr. Kahsai Gebrehiwot said “I am very glad to hear that UNDP is satisfied so far with the on going activities and I will continue the efforts to make sure that the programmes continue in accordance to the plan”.

Through its recovery programme, UNDP Eritrea is supporting the war affected populations of Debub and Gash Barka regions so that they can reintegrate themselves into the socio economic aspects of the Eritrean society.

Supporting the efforts in the construction of water supply systems, clearing and ploughing farm sites, providing shelter assistance are some of the practice areas where UNDP is involved in the two regional administrations. This will definitely contribute in the fight against poverty and the efforts to achieve the internationally agreed Millennium Development Goals.
