The Africa Supreme Audit Institute (AFROSAI) convened a weeklong workshop on financial, performance and compliance audits at the Office of the Auditor General (OAG) in Eritrea. The aim of the workshop, which was held from 22 to 26 May 2017, was to equip Eritrea auditors with relevant skills in compliance to the international auditing standards.

The OAG is the Supreme Audit Institution (SAI) in Eritrea, tasked with checking the accounts of all Government institutions, parastatals and state owned enterprises. This vast mandate requires continuous recruitment of accounting graduates and training to ensure that the institution is compliant with the required international standards. UNDP is partnering with OAG to enhance human and institutional capacity as well as equipping the classrooms and library with furniture, computers, training manuals and accounting books. With UNDP support, the institution has also adopted use of solar energy and boosted security through installation of cameras and monitoring devices.

Mr. Gherezgiher Ghebremedhin, the Auditor General said that the AFROSAI training was a step towards establishing a permanent performance audit department by the end of 2017 and forensic audit as well as environmental audit departments in 2018.

Earlier in the year, the OAG signed an MOU with AFROSAI to support the institution in establishing performance and compliance audit departments. To this end, UNDP is supporting the capacity building workshops and providing tools, equipment and resources they need to undertake these tasks. Already, UNDP has been supporting Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) training for accounting graduates. Currently 36 accountants have been certified and 170 are enrolled for ACCA training to acquire international certification.
