Globally UNDP helps countries strengthen electoral and legislative systems, improve access to justice and public administration and develop a greater capacity to deliver basic services to those most in need. UNDP believes that proper governance structures provide an ‘enabling environment' for the realization of sustainable development and in particular elimination of poverty.

Effective governance systems are likely to be characterized with participation, transparency, equity, accountability, coherence, responsiveness, integration, and ethicality. Promoting democracy and strengthening the rule of law were strongly highlighted and endorsed at the Millennium Summit of 2000.

Our goals aree geared to engage in global advocacy and analysis to generate knowledge, alliance building and promotion of enabling frameworks on key issues, policy advice and support for national capacity building, and knowledge networking and sharing of good practices.
